In the last month ancient paths took us into Greece, up Mars Hill, past the massive columns of the Parthenon, down through the city of Corinth and into the land of Turkey. We walked the well-worn Turkish paths through age-old underground cities, into cave churches of the 9th and 10th centuries, and past the volcanic ash rock formations of Cappadocia.
These paths are mysterious to me. I find myself attempting to imagine what has taken place along these walkways. How were the paths first formed? Who walked them all those years ago? What conversations took place among those who strode along the path? What arguments were heard? What secrets were told?
What seems to be most remarkable about these ancient paths is that they have lasted for years. And years. They served a purpose centuries ago, while still serving a purpose today. Amazing. So old. And yet so steadfast.
There it is. So old. So steadfast. The timeless truths of God. Paths of righteousness. “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’ “ Jeremiah 6:16, New International Version
